Just after Vik, the road starts for the sandurs. Entering this area is amazing. At the end of a corner, you arrive on a desert of stones and sand, stretching to the horizon.
This is the result of a « jokullhaup » : a volcanoe erupts under a glacier, ice melts down and a powerful stream makes its way under the glacier. When it comes out, the flow destroys everything, like a tidal wave.
Sandurs are 200 km long, going 30 km inside from the coast. When travelling through, the scenery always changes. Ashes, rocks, hills on which grass and lichens try to grow make the landscape look peaceful or concerning, according to brightness.
