AROUND LANDMANNALAUGAR

Ashes, burned rocks, shaky tracks : driving in the icelandic deserts is note really easy. The landscape, fortunately, make forget these little problems. In this area is Hekla, on of the most active volcanoes of the country.

It keeps on spitting ashes and still threatens to erupt. Last one was in 1991. At Middle-Age, an eruption killed almost all cattle and many people died from starving.

A track starts from N°1 road to Stong, where an old farm has been preserved. The 5 km bring you down into another world. Meeting Martians would not even be a surprise as you really feel on another planet. Behind the mountains is Landmannalaugar, one of the most famous places of Iceland, that you can’t reach without a 4WD.
